GoGet car sharing is well established in many Sydney suburbs and has just launched in Brisbane.
GoGet charge a $25 joining fee plus a refundable $500 deposit. You then pay a $0, $9 or $29 monthly fee which allows you to hire cars by the hour for $13.55, $8.45 or $5.65 – the more you pay monthly, the less you pay per hour.
When you want to hire a car, you book through GoGet’s website and then just go to the car with the electronic membership card and drive off. Cars are parked in dedicated GoGet bays, most include 150kms for free and the rates include petrol. Any tolls you incur are added to your account. You can book a car for only an hour if you need.
Consumers Ransom have tried GoGet and the booking went smoothly, the car was clean and where we were told it would be. Toll was billed to our account the following month and there were no billing errors.
GoGet’s site has some useful comparisons: GoGet vs Car Rental and GoGet vs Owning a car
Ransom note
So is it cheaper and better than car rental or ownership?
Yes, if you live in a suburb where the cars are located and don’t drive very often – if you only drive for 3 or 4 hours each weekend then car sharing will cost less than car hire or a taxi.
